Experience

My special interest is in management of cancer pain and other symptoms associated with cancer such as breathlessness, lethargy, bowel disorder, nausea and vomiting and the lack of appetite. Approximately 30% - 50% of cancer patients experience pain whilst undergoing treatment and 70% - 90% of people with advance cancer experience pain. With today's knowledge of cancer pain and the availability of various analgesics and adjunct medications, cancer pain can be managed effectively.

I am also actively involved in providing people with incurable cancer with best supportive and palliative care. Caring for patients, even towards the advanced stages of disease, needs to be professional and credible.

About Me

Hello!

A native KL boy, I left Chong Hwa Independent High School in 1992 after my SPM for boarding school and A-levels in Sevenoaks, England. From the tropical hustle-bustle of Jalan Ipoh to the idyllic Kent countryside, from the daily dose of self-restraint and discipline to character honing and free speech, it was a truly memorable experience. I completed my undergraduate medical training at the University College London and The Royal Free Hospital in 1999, gained full registration with the General Medical Council UK after my housemanship. I continued to train in General Internal Medicine as Senior House Officer in teaching and district general hospitals around London, United Kingdom between 2000 and 2004.

I obtained my postgraduate certification in General Internal Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians of London in 2004. After which, I gained entry into specialist training in Internal Medicine as Specialist Registrar at St Mary’s Hospital Imperial College London, The Royal Free Hospital London and East Surrey Hospital. It was during that time I discovered my special interest in cancer pain and symptom management. Upon completing my postgraduate training in Internal Medicine, I proceeded to subspecialty training in Palliative Medicine in internationally renowned cancer centres, The Royal Marsden Hospital London and Mount Vernon Cancer Centre in Northwood, United Kingdom.

I left London in 2009. Upon returning to Malaysia I took up the position as Palliative Medicine Physician at Hospital Selayang's Palliative Care Unit and at the same time continued to be an integral senior team member of the acute General Internal Medicine team. I was awarded Specialist Accredition in General Internal Medicine and Palliative Medicine by the Ministry of Health Malaysia in November 2010 and became a member of the Academy of Medicine in 2011.

I converse fluently in English, Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin and Cantonese.
