About Me

I was born in Penang and received a very traditional Chinese upbringing. I was drawn towards a medical career for emotional reasons as I had a cousin who was born with a congenital heart condition. Having spent 19 years in Malaysia and through 2 local Chinese Schools, I found myself in England preparing for entrance into medical school in 1977 where I subsequently spent the next 19 years of my life. The first year in the UK was tough but most memorable. I took my "A" levels in one year to save time and cost amidst making language and cultural adjustments and gained my entry into Liverpool University to read medicine the following year. My hard work was paid off handsomely with several prizes and medals throughout my medical course and full colours in sports. I graduated with honours in 1983. My interest in urology was fired by Anthony Desmond, a great teacher and mentor who retired a few years ago. I was also fortunate to come under the tutelage of many other great teachers, amongst whom included Tim Stephenson, Malcolm Lucas, Philip Matthew and the late Windsor Bowsher. In between my specialist training, I took 2 years out to do laboratory research on laser treatment which finally earned me a Doctorate degree in Medicine from my Alma Mater. I returned to Malaysia in 1996 to join Universiti Malaya where I was associate professor and left for private practice in 2000. I still keep an interest in academic matters and serve as trainer and external examiner for Malaysian and Singaporean urology trainees. I am also a regular guest on national radio on health matters. I have a strong sense of social justice and propriety and will do what I can to help promote that.

After 19 years in England and Wales, I have inevitably soaked up a lot of western values, work ethics and culture and developed my interest in classical music and passion for fine wines. At the same time, I also enjoyed singing and karaoke. I met my wife in university and we are blessed with 2 boys.
