Haematology

Haematology is one branch of internal medicine that is concerned with diseases of the blood and the organs involved in forming blood. It includes the study of etiology - diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and prevention of blood diseases. Haematologists are also involved with laboratory study of blood which is essential in the day to day management of many common diseases. Haematology physicians also very frequently do further study in oncology - the medical treatment of cancer and deal with treatment of blood cancers (leukaemia) and cancers of the lymphatic system (lymphoma).

Blood diseases affect the production of blood and its components, such as blood cells, haemoglobin, blood proteins, the mechanism of coagulation, etc. Others may specialise further or have special interests, for example in:

  • treating bleeding disorders such as haemophilia and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura
  • treating hemoglobinopathies
  • in the science of blood transfusion and the work of a blood bank
  • in bone marrow and stem cell transplantation

Only some blood disorders can be cured.
