Psychiatry

Psychiatry, which literally means the 'medical treatment of the mind', is the medical specialty devoted to the study and treatment of mental health disorders. In its on-going attempts to define, understand, categorize disorders and determine the best treatments, the medical specialty of psychiatry is always up against the enormous complexity of the human brain.  Both biological factors and environmental factors contribute to symptoms of distress, and the role each plays varies from person to person.  Both psychotherapy and drugs are effective for most mental health disorders and often a combination of the two works best.

A Psychiatric assessment comprises of the following:

·                     A detailed history from the patient and carer

·                     a mental status examination

·                     physical examinations may be conducted.

·                     Neuroimaging, neurophysiological and blood examinations may also be carried out

·                     Psychological testing may be recomemnded

Psychiatric treatment applies a variety of modalities, including medication andpsychotherapy  Treatment may be as an inpatient or outpatient, according to severity of nature and severity of the mental health disorder.
